CHAPTER 10

“LUCK BE A LADY TONIGHT”

“Gambling: The sure way of getting nothing for something.”

—Wilson Mizner

Casinos are an interesting place for a psychic to be. There's always a deluge of jokes and one-liners, mostly revolving around why I can't go up to the machines and win tons of money. If I'm so psychic, don't I know if the roulette wheel is going to hit red or black? Why aren't there any psychic lottery winners? Unfortunately, that's not the way all of this works. First, when I get information, it's in bits and pieces. I might get a flash of something or an impression about something. But I don't get information like I'm reading it out of a book, so it would be hard for me to get specific numbers. The blessing that I have to communicate with the dead really comes from a special source, and so it's not something to use for greed or personal gains. In fact, using my abilities for financial gain adds a huge level of anxiety and shifts the energy.

About two years ago, my father's cousin invited us to a family reunion at Mohegan Sun, a casino in Connecticut. It was equidistant from some of the other places that family members were coming from. We have a pretty tight-knit, nuclear family, although I'm not very close to my father's side of the family. They live out of state, and my father was never really close to them. He doesn't have any brothers or sisters, and when his father died, the family dynamics changed a bit. As a child, my father was close to his cousins because they were mostly the same age range, and he would play with them a lot. Although we don't see them frequently, we do see them once in a while.

Because we had not seen that side of the family in quite some time, my sister Kelly and I decided to go. Of my two sisters, Kelly is more aware of my psychic gift and freely talks about it. Kara, my other sister, is a little bit more skeptical of it and more of a “believe it when I see it” type.

We arrived at the casino and immediately greeted our cousins. As we sat there talking to our cousins, a Spirit appeared at a nearby table. At first glance, I thought it was a living person sitting there, but I got a strange feeling, and when I looked closely, I could tell from the way the woman's face looked that she was deceased. Sometimes it's hard to tell if a person is living or deceased if I look quickly, but the complexion of her face was significantly drained of color. She stared longingly at me. She was older, maybe in her seventies, I guessed, with short gray hair. She wore a blue denim top with a pair of khakis. Her face looked smooth but a little wrinkled, and she had crystal blue eyes that seemed deep and powerful. She looked as though she must have passed away fairly recently because she was wearing somewhat modern-looking clothes.
